Wedding FAQ

Q. What style of photography do you offer?

A. We shoot weddings in a “storybook style” so that the photos tell the story of your day.  It’s a nice mix of traditional, artistic and photojournalistic styles.  You will receive the traditional formal & informal portraits, artistic photos and of course all those casual candid shots that everyone loves.  It is our mission to flow along with your wedding day capturing its feel and emotion without disrupting it.  We offer unlimited coverage for your wedding day so you will not be rushed nor will you have to stage any part of your day!  We are there for you all throughout your day to capture the memories as they happen.

Q.  Will it be you that takes our wedding photos or do you hire other photographers?

A.  Yes, Scott & Kris work together at every wedding as a team to make sure every special moment is captured.  We spend time with you in the months before your wedding day getting to know you and your vision of your day so we want to be the ones to help you capture those memories!

Q. Why is wedding photography so expensive?

A.  There are many things when combined together make wedding photography special.  As professional photographers we devote our time to the understanding of the art of composition, the aspects of lighting and the technical knowledge required to handle the many diverse locations that span the wedding day.  Other expenses include those of a professional business like the insurance of equipment brought to the wedding, the cost of albums and prints in post production as well as our time required to bring it all together.  While these expenses contribute to the final cost of a good wedding photographer you have to weigh the value you place upon the images captured.  Leaving the work to chance can leave you with poor results that you regret for a long time.  After all, there are no second chances.

Q. We have a friend with a ‘good camera’ why do we need to pay a professional?

 A. You are placing a lot pressure on your friend!  Friends and family members typically do not have the experience to capture all of the detail and emotion of your wedding day.  They are constantly distracted by people who know them and want their attention.  It is also likely that they do not have the professional equipment to capture and process the images to with top quality.  As professionals we have invested tens of thousands of dollars in cameras, professional lenses and equipment.  It is important to have all of this equipment to capture the day and be prepared for every situation.  Your friend will also not have the professional resources to give you quality albums, proofs and prints.  Why would you like an album full of snap shots when you can have professional heirlooms to pass down to your family?  We have the professional experience to help you preserve your memories forever.

Q. Do you have backup equipment in case of failure?

A. Yes!  We have backup cameras and a selection of additional gear to handle any situation.  Our images are backed up on location and double backed up once we are back in the studio.  We maintain offsite copies of all of our work to insure against image loss.  As part of this process we thoroughly plan and prepare for your wedding day to keep things working smoothly.

Q. How do we reserve our wedding date?

A. Just contact us to set up a free consultation and we go over your wedding day and what photography needs you will have.  Then we put together a contract to secure your wedding day photography and you put down a $300 deposit.  The deposit goes toward the final cost of your wedding package.

Q: Where can I see your work?

A:  The best way is to set up your consultation & visit our studio. We are working on new photos every day & we love to share them!  You can also visit the gallery on this website

Q:  Do you have travel fees if we are out of the Dubuque area?

A:  We will travel up to 60 miles from Dubuque with no mileage fees.  If your wedding location would require mileage or hotel fees, we will discuss that at your consultation.  We also like to travel for Destination Weddings in different locations such as Jamaica, Cancun, Hawaii, etc… If you are planning a destination wedding please call us for details.  If you are getting married at a resort, sometimes there is a photographer provided but they may not give you the sensational photography that you are dreaming of at such a beautiful location.  Again, leave it to the professionals to capture your memories.

Q: Do we get a Proof Book and do we get to keep it?

A: Yes!  We want you to have all the proofs from your wedding to enjoy forever.  The proofs you receive are “quality” proofs and not raw images directly off our camera.  We take the time to color touch, crop & rotate every photo we take at your wedding giving you only the best photos. The cost of the proofs is included in your package.

Q:  Do you put our proofs online so our out of town family & friends can view them?

A:  Yes!  All of our packages include a password protected web page for your proofs so you can share them with everyone.  The length of time they are online varies from 3-12 months depending on the package you select.

Q:  Do you offer Engagement Sessions?

A:  Yes!  In fact, that’s one of our favorite parts of the wedding process!  We use that time to get to know you two as a couple and for you to get to know us as your photographers.  The engagement session is a fun & stress free photography session.  It will be much easier for you to relax and express your feelings and emotions once you spend time with us & we get to know each other.  We want you to be completely comfortable with our presence behind the camera and we want your photos to be the natural you.  We spend a lot of time with you in the months prior with planning the day and forming a tight bond with you so your wedding photos are what you want.

Q: What is the best advice you can give us about wedding photography?

A:  Choose a photographer that fits your personality.  Make sure that you meet with your photographer(s) in person and get to know them & their style.  You are going to be spending all day & night with them and you need to make sure they fit what you are looking for.

You need to make sure that you understand all the things that come in the package that you select.  It is very hard to compare wedding photographers by price alone; you can’t compare apples to apples unless you fully understand what products are included in your package.

Watch out for photographers that offer only “hourly” coverage, they may lure you in with a cheap price and then after the wedding day you may realize that you need to spend $1000’s more to get the products that you want from your memories.  This is why at S. Kelly Photography we have packages that are complete & affordable.  We offer unlimited wedding day coverage and we include everything in your package from the engagements to the proofs to the completed wedding album.  We also include the little extras like the mother’s books, custom photo thank you cards, large framed prints and smaller prints for you to share with your family & friends.  It all comes together in a package that is fit for your wants & needs.

Always get a contract.  This protects you as a customer.  You don’t want to jeopardize your wedding day memories by an unprofessional attitude towards your wedding.

Have FUN on your wedding day with your photos!  Let your photographer help you stay stress free about your photos.  A good wedding photographer will know how to do this while giving you stunning, creative photography that you will cherish forever.
